Album Review: Marsha Ambrosius - Far Away
by Afriyie "Free" Amankwaa

Even though she is already recognized as a talented singer because of her involvement in Floetry, Marsha Ambrosius is facing the next challenge in her career: reinventing herself as a solo artist. As a huge fan of her “rain like” voice, I am highly anticipating her debut effort on J Records, Late Nights and Early Mornings. However, there are a few things I would like this Liverpool, England native to keep up with, her self-esteem.

I am well aware that Floetry’s split was due to “creative differences.” We were used to Marsha as the “songstress,” someone with that laidback persona. The split did not have too much of a terrible outcome on her career. I mean, she was able to write and produce hits for artists such as Michael Jackson, Nas, and Alicia Keys. But, it seems to me their breakup did have a negative effect on her mentality. She was dropped from Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records and gained 70 pounds in one year. One year! That’s crazy.

I’m assuming with much soul searching, she was able to gain her confidence back and dropped her weight. She does look fantastic now and has a sound that she describes as “honest and consistent.” Marsha released “The Sextapes” as a way to showcase a woman’s sexy side (Part two was the best in my opinion), but, the tracks that she’s debuted from Late Nights and Early Mornings, such as “Far Away,” shows a softer side to her. I think her image is going to consist of her being a “typical female.” I just hope she does not let the industry change her, and would like her to keep up with her newfound confidence. Go Ms. Ambrosius!
